Why Brinell?

A large indentation averages more of the material.

Brinell is widely used for castings, forgings and other materials where a very small indent may not represent a coarse or non-uniform microstructure. The method is simple in principle—but a reliable result requires control of force, time, geometry, surface preparation and optical measurement.

A tungsten carbide ball of diameter D is pressed into the prepared test surface under the force required by the selected Brinell scale.

After unloading, measure the indentation in two approximately perpendicular directions with a calibrated manual or automatic optical system.

What does BHT-X mean?

BHT-X stands for Brinell Hardness Testing. It is a Multitek Technologies website for Brinell test knowledge, testing systems, software and customer support.

What is measured in a Brinell hardness test?

A verified machine presses a tungsten carbide ball into a metal under a specified force. After unloading, the indentation is measured optically in two approximately perpendicular directions and the mean diameter is used to calculate HBW.

Does Multitek supply automatic Brinell hardness testers?

Multitek supplies configurable manual, motorized and automated Brinell systems. Available capability depends on the selected machine, load system, specimen capacity, optics and software configuration.

Can BMS Essentials work with an existing Brinell tester?
