A system, not one number

Brinell confidence has several verification layers.

The force can be correct while the optical reading is wrong—or the reference block can pass at one scale while another range needs service. A useful plan distinguishes each layer.

Verify applicable force values, application behavior and the loading system under the required method.

Confirm ball material, nominal diameter, identification, cleanliness, damage and applicable verification.

Direct and indirect verification

Know what the certificate actually covers.

Direct verification evaluates machine components or functions such as force and measuring-system performance. Indirect verification uses standardized Brinell reference blocks to evaluate the machine’s result under defined conditions.

ASTM E10 and ISO 6506 divide machine verification and reference-block requirements into controlled provisions. The applicable service scope depends on the machine type, test scales, location and standard edition.

  • manufacturer, model and serial number;
  • required Brinell scales and force range;
  • machine location and on-site/laboratory preference;
  • last certificate and current problem, if any;
  • optical reader or software details;
  • required accreditation/standard and due date.

From identification to usable evidence

Scope review

Confirm the machine, scales, method, location, certificate requirement and whether repair is needed before calibration.

Condition inspection

Inspect the frame, loading system, anvil, indenter, controls, optics and operating condition. Calibration cannot correct a damaged mechanism.

Verification and adjustment

Perform the agreed checks with suitable standards. Adjust or repair only through an approved process, then repeat affected verification.

Reference-block evaluation

Test appropriate certified blocks and scales to evaluate combined machine performance.

Certificate and findings

Issue the agreed report/certificate, record results and uncertainty as applicable, and identify limitations or recommended work.

Routine verification

Daily checks belong to the user’s quality system.

Reference block

Use a suitable certified block, clean test surface and correct scale. Avoid repeatedly crowding one area.

Optical check

Confirm the microscope/camera calibration, focus, illumination and image scale remain valid.

Reaction plan

Define what happens when a check fails: stop testing, identify affected work, investigate, adjust and reverify.

Frequency: follow the standard, accreditation, manufacturer and internal procedure. “Once per year” is not a universal substitute for routine verification.

Calibration questions

What parts of a Brinell tester need verification?

The applicable method addresses the force system, indenter, indentation measuring system and overall performance. The exact direct and indirect verification scope depends on the standard and machine.

Is a reference block check the same as full calibration?

No. A routine block check verifies system performance at selected conditions. Periodic calibration/verification addresses defined machine components and performance requirements under the applicable standard.

Can calibration be performed on site?

On-site service is available for suitable instruments and locations. Confirm machine size, scales, location, environmental conditions and the required accredited scope before scheduling.

Do you supply a NABL certificate?

Multitek Calibration provides accredited services within its approved scope. Confirm the requested Brinell scales, location and current scope before order placement.
